From strength to strength
A 4AG Titan 6300 roller drill coupled to a Cat Challenger makes for an impressive combination in northern Southland.
Russell Drummond runs three sheep & beef properties in the Mossburn/Five Rivers region totaling 2800 hectares. The terrain at Five Rivers is flat, whereas the ‘Castledown’ properties have a variety of rolling to steep countryside. The large scale of the operation means around 750 hectares of ground is cultivated each year, with the majority of this being winter feed crops such as swedes or kale, and almost a third of this area in re-grassing.
The rubber-tracked Cat performs very well in the steep, challenging conditions, virtually eliminating wheelslip when pulling the 5 ton of roller drill. It is a 1996 model putting out 300 horsepower, and we can go places that we would really struggle to get to with a conventional wheeled tractor, Russell says.
After first viewing the Titan at South Island Fieldays at Waimumu, Drummond was really impressed by the overall strength and build of the machine, which was a major influencing factor in his purchase.
“We also have a large amount of rocks to contend with in many of our fields, so the ‘Duraforge’ ductile cast steel rings on the Titan really appealed to me. We use a rock picker to remove a lot of the stones off the fields, but there is still a lot left.
We are very pleased with how the machine has gone, and the finish it leaves, which is far better than the roller drill we had before. With the old machine we had to drag harrows behind it as well, which often resulted in the rocks being pulled up again.”
